Three heights from one model, and why the diameters are not round
Two column vases, each offered in three sizes taken from the model rather than from a price list.
Why it is here
Because most of the work in offering a size is deciding what to publish about it. The scaling took an afternoon; agreeing that the catalogue would carry 122.3 rather than 122 is the part that shows up on every product page on this site.
The brief
Offer one design at more than one size without drawing it more than once, and without publishing a set of sizes that turn out to be approximate when the piece arrives.
What was actually hard
Scaling a model is arithmetic; publishing what comes out of it is not. A relieved wall has two diameters — one across the ridges and one across the troughs — and they are not the same number. A single rounded figure would be wrong in one of the two places somebody would measure.
The concept
Three heights from one model at 0.75×, 1× and 1.2×, with the published measurements taken from the model’s own bounding box at each scale rather than typed by hand into a table.
What changed along the way
The prices stopped being a multiplier. A 150 mm column and a 240 mm column do not cost 0.75 and 1.2 of the same number — they cost the machine time that height actually takes. So each size carries its own price, anchored against what the studio already knew a 200 mm printed wall costs to run.
What the parts showed
That the odd numbers are the honest ones. 67 mm across the ridges is 64.6 mm across the troughs on the same piece, and a catalogue that rounded both to 65 would be describing an object nobody could measure. The published figures are the measured ones, decimals included.
Where it ended up
Two designs — the Corrente and the Foglia — each offered in three heights, with the measurements on the record and shown in the specifications. The number of colours differs between them and that is a design decision, not an oversight: the Foglia’s furl needs enough contrast to read at the fold, so it is offered in four where the Corrente is offered in six.
