A texture test that became two products
A bark relief, run to see whether the grain would survive at the layer height we work at. It never left the bench.
Why it is here
Because it is the ordinary way a studio object comes about, and the ordinary way is usually hidden. Nobody set out to design a vase. A technical question produced an object, the object produced a reason to keep it, and keeping it produced two products. Published as what it is — an ISPIRENZA product-development example — rather than dressed up as a commission.
The brief
There was not one, which is the honest starting point for this write-up. It was a test print made to answer a technical question about surface, on the studio’s own account and with no object in mind at the end of it.
What was actually hard
A bark relief is the least forgiving thing to print on a curved wall. Too coarse a layer and the grain reads as stepping — the eye sees the process instead of the surface — and too fine a layer costs machine time on a piece where nobody would see the difference. The question was whether the texture survives at the height we already work at.
The concept
Not a texture laid over a cylinder. The wall itself follows the grain, the rim stays torn where the trunk broke, and the roots spread wide enough to hold it steady — so the form and the surface are one decision rather than a shape with a pattern applied to it.
What changed along the way
The door and the window were not decoration and were not in the original test. They were added because a piece with no front gets set down facing whichever side looks least like a seam. A door gives the object a front, and it gets placed facing the room.
What the print showed
It worked at 0.16 mm, which is the layer height at which the wall texture stops reading as layers, and that number is now on the record as a material note rather than as studio folklore. The piece never left the bench: everybody who walked past picked it up and turned it around to find the door, which is a stronger result than anything the test was designed to measure.
Where it ended up
Two catalogue records from one model. The same trunk is a vase and a pen holder — not a variant and not a duplicate, but two canonical entries that link to each other, because they are two different things to buy and two different questions to search for. Two sizes, measured off the model to the tenth of a millimetre: 79.7 × 73.4 × 120 mm and 132.8 × 122.3 × 200 mm.

Materials and finish
- PLA, printed at 0.16 mm
- Printed in matte PLA at a 0.16 mm layer, which is the height at which the wall texture stops reading as layers.
- Matte, low-sheen surface
- Finished to avoid a glossy plastic look and to keep fingerprints from reading.
